What the Chicken Knows: 02/16/25
What the Chicken Knows by Sy Montgomery (2024) is a short memoir about living with chickens. The flock began with a gift of chicks and from there she had a flock for about two decades. The book is written from a point where she's no longer keeping chickens but still has fond memories from when she did. Most of the book is anecdotal from things she's learned or experienced over time, from how to use imprinting to bond with the chickens to things that can set the flock off when they are otherwise harmonious. The tone is lighthearted and sometimes nostalgic. It has a similar vibe to Therapy Chickens: Let the Wisdom of the Flock Bring You Joy by Tedra Hamel (2024) except that the chicken discussion is more broad than being about specific chickens or specific situations. There's an appendix with color photos of the different breeds mentioned in the book. Five stars Comments (0) |
