Takedown: 02/04/19
Takedown by Laura Shovan is a middle grade novel about wrestling. It's told in alternating chapters narrated by a girl and a boy. Mikayla has brothers and loves wrestling. She's fought hard for a role on the team but not everyone is thrilled to have a girl on the team. Meanwhile Lev has been training with his buddies and is disappointed to be paired with a girl. So it's about sexism in sports and toxic masculinity. Mikayla has to go above and beyond to prove herself, more so than any of her male teammates. Lev meanwhile has to suffer through constant teasing for being teamed with a girl. Beyond that, this book is best suited for readers who are in into wresting or similar school sports.
