Immortal Snake: 04/30/08
The cover story in the May issue of FSF is "Immortal Snake" by Rachel Pollack. It is heavily inspired by the African myth known as "The Ruin of Kasch." Pollack though has transported the myth to a new world that reminded a little of Robert Silverberg's Majipoor and especially Valentine Pontifex. The story is one of change brought on by the human desire for power. The newest Immortal Snake and his two chosen companions conspire against the Readers, the true holders of power in the land of Written in the Sky. With all revolutions come the threat of a vacuum when the new leaders die. Only the best planned revolutions take into account what comes after the victors are no longer in charge.
